News Flash - Approval in Parliament of euthanasia projects

Projects on the decriminalization of euthanasia or medically assisted death, were approved on 20th February 2020 by the Portuguese Parliament.

The projects had been presented by the policital parties, BE, PAN, PS, PEV and Liberal Initiative.

They are now being discussed within the Commission of Constitutional Affairs, Rights, Freedoms and Guarantees.

This process is expected to be completed by the end of this legislative session.

The final diploma will also be analyzed by the President of the Republic, who may also request the intervention of the Constitutional Court, if he has any doubts regarding its conformity to the Constitution.

The first step was therefore taken in a process that may still take some time to be implemented in the Portuguese Legal system.
